bugsy malone, but with less cream and more entertainment

the 1920's was a glorious year time, and it is also the setting of our musical theatre performance, bugsy malone. before i go on to who exactly i am, lets see why the 1920's was so great.

what were the buildings like? some of the buildings, like houses, were quite simple, where as other were tall and fancy, like apartment buildings.







what was fashion like?
males- men typically wore fancy tuxedos, and wore little to no make up.




females- females wore mainly dresses or fancy tops, accompanied by long skirts.




the female makeup consisted of quite rosy cheeks, big, red lips and dark eye shadow.



what was home life like?
females- girls were typically, teachers, librarians, nurses, and were more the cooks and the cleaners of the house.
males- males were 'king of the castle', he was more in charge of the house, and they had more 'commercial jobs', such as directors, wheat farm labourers, and telephone operators.

what was entertainment like?
plenty of olden day singing and dancing, that's for sure. movies were silent in the 1920's, but luckily radios weren't.






now, onto my character.

I was gifted the part of Leroy Smith, a kind boxer, who at first was hesitant to be a boxer, but ended up being a heavyweight champ. I was then asked to create a 'bio' of sorts for my character, so here's mine:

full name: Leroy Smith
Age: around 18-20
Place Of Birth: New York
most common emotion (state of mind): cheerful
physical characteristics (movements, stance, gestures, etc): has a confident posture, although he moves cautiously. His gestures are kind, and he never dares give off a bad or offensive gesture.
strengths:  mainly his fists, and his boxing.
weaknesses: he has a strong weakness to bribing, and always gives in to it
fears: he has a fear of gangs, and does everything to avoid them
secrets: he doesn't really have any secrets, as he is quite open about everything
their childhood/upbringing: he was born into a poor family, and quickly became a down and out, but after become quite separated by them, he left the down and outs and became a loner.
who are their important relationships:
-bugsy, Leroy saves Bugsy from the down and outs, and Bugsy convinces him to be a boxer. Bugsy helps Leroy become a boxer, and in return Leroy helps Bugsy save fat sams.
-cagey joe, Cagey Joe is Leroy's boxing coach

a sockdollager.....a what? A sockdollager, thats what!
our next task was to learn some New York slang, and write a conversation our character might have with someone else in the cast (ill be using bugsy for this)

bugsy: "Wake up Dewdropper {slacker}!"
leroy: "Huh, what makes me a Dewdroper?"
Bugsy: "I was just kidding, you're Jake!" {fine}
Leroy: "Whew, I thought you hated me for a second."
Bugsy: "anyway, I got a sinker {doughnut} for ya."
Leroy: "Gee, thanks."
Bugsy, "See that stand over there?"
leroy: "yeah."
Bugsy: "Lets blouse!" {lets destroy that popsicle stand}
leroy: "wha- okay, i guess."



reflection of what ive actually done.

So far, ive completely leant my lines, and my main dance, 'so you wanna be a boxer'. We have also learnt how everything is going to go, and had a complete run through of it. I think we need to work on timing more, and cues, as alot of us missed our cues {me included}. Overall, musical theatre so far has been alot of fun, and i cant wait for what is to come in our journey, although we have little time left to complete it.
